Introduction

In the last several days there are reports regarding a strange behavior of SSMS, which seems like started with version 18.11 and continue in version 18.11.1

A Beeps sound can is played each time we close the Query Editor Window.

One of the discussion can seen here at Microsoft QnA forum: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/775502/ssms-18111-beeps-when-i-close-a-query-window.html

Diagnostic

First, I can confirm that this issue started in version 18.11 and it does not exists in previous version like 18.10

My tests suggests that this is a bug related to (1) not disconnecting the server before closing the windows and/or (2) Not alerting us that the document was changed, which play the beep as a result.

(2) Notice that when we close an editor window which we changed the content, then we should get the alert to save the page

But this windows does not raised!

(1) The SSMS should disconnect the server, which seems like it does not.

...

I have no more information for this at this time

Workaround

If you disconnect from the server manually then this annoying beep will not played but this means that you need to do each time which is not realistic.

Update!

Microsoft confirmed that this is a bug and will be fixed in the next version (will be rolled into SSMS 18.12)
